Our Story

Northern Power Technologies, LLC

30 Years of Service to Customers in North and South Dakota

Northern Power Technologies was established in 1984 as a division of Dakota Data Services, Inc., a data processing service which also sold turnkey computer systems. In 1985, NPT became a representative firm for Exide Electronics serving North and South Dakota, and was split from its parent company. Since that time, NPT has represented the same UPS manufacturer through its various ownership and name changes – Exide Electronics, Powerware, and now Eaton. With the acquisition of Powerware Corp. by Eaton, NPT’s territory was expanded to include the panhandle of Nebraska and six counties of Montana.

The company has represented and sold various power quality equipment offerings since the beginning, but UPS has always been the primary interest.

Gary N. Johnson, P.E., bought the company from Dakota Data Services in 1986 and served as its president since through the end of 2013. Mr. Johnson is an electrical engineer having worked for Collins Radio Company and Honeywell, Inc., prior to moving back to his home state and participating in the initial formation of Dakota Data Services.

In January of 2014, Northern Power Technologies was acquired by David R. Walgenbach, located in Sioux Falls, SD, and the company is now operated under the name, Northern Power Technologies, LLC, with offices in both Rapid City and Sioux Falls. Mr. Walgenbach has a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from South Dakota State University and a Masters degree of Business Administration from Regis University in Denver, CO. Mr. Walgenbach has spent the past 23 years delivering solutions to customers in the electrical distribution and power quality market segments. Of those 23 years, the first 19 of them were as an employee of Eaton Corporation in various capacities in the United States, and has traveled extensively throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Central and South America.

Northern Power Technologies, LLC is well positioned to continue to deliver the same type of service and technical expertise to your business as we have over the last 30 years and the next 30 years.
